Rarely do I wear jewelry, other than my wedding band. But when I do, I have three rings that have special meaning to me.
The first is my grandfather's ring. He was raised in LaFayette Lodge No. 19 in Washington, D.C. Like his father before him, he was a Master Mason. He had no sons, but I, his grandson, followed the tradition and joined the fraternity. I was raised in Bridgeport Lodge No. 589. My grandfather wore this ring all his adult life. I remember his Masonic funeral, even though I was only five at the time. When I was made a Mason, my grandmother gave this ring to me. This ring reminds me of the teachings, tenets and truths of Masonry, cherished by my grandfather, and passed down to me by his lodge brothers.
The third is my father's ring, and it contains the crest and coat of arms of the name DURDEN. My father, like his father, was proud of his name. My grandfather was a successful businessman, who lost his worldly possessions when the banks failed in 1929, and he had had substatial business holdings. He was a sharecropper during the depression; my father was born on a farm in Georgia in 1935. I never knew my grandfather, but he left a good name. Some thirty years later, the Durdens re-united for the wedding of my cousin Kelly, and I remember the stories my other cousins told about our grandfather. He was a good man, and he had a good name that he passed on to my father, and my father passed on to me. This ring reminds me of the proverb that a good name is rather to be chosen than great riches. There are things more valuable - and more lasting - than gold and silver.
